An ancient Chinese proverb reminds us; “To listen well, is as powerful a means of influence as to talk well.” While everyone can benefit from this sage advice, these words of wisdom are particularly appropriate for great leaders. Would you consider yourself a good listener? Perhaps a more important question might be, how would your clients, prospects, business associates, friends and family members rate your listening ability? Their feedback just might surprise you, because most people believe they’re much better listeners than they truly are.
Poor listeners frequently confuse the physical act of hearing with the emotional art of listening. When you genuinely listen you show respect, create trust and develop rapport. The only way to become a better listener is to mindfully practice “active listening” in all of your daily encounters… from the kitchen table to the boardroom table. Here are a few tips.
- Listen with your ears and your eyes – verbally and nonverbally
- Empty your mind of distracting thoughts – they can come back later
- Be present
- Acknowledge what the person has just said with words, a simple smile or a nod
- Be open to hearing something new and different. It is dangerous to assume that you know what they are going to say
If you are looking to improve your listening and leadership skills, please contact me directly at cgoss@prominent-personnel.ca.

Do you know where your chokepoint is in your business model and industry? When Rockefeller set out to “win” in the oil business he knew he had to gain an advantage in transportation costs, hence, his heavy involvement with the railroads. Where do you need to gain your advantage? Please remember…
1. In planning, we only need to plan 90 days and 10 years out. The “middle” is now gone, as experienced in 2008, 2009 and 2010
2. Keep it simple, if it is too difficult it likely won’t work
3. Firsthand data is always best, gather it in real time!

We are taking a good, hard look at the following underlying principles in our business:
1. Priorities – what are our top five priorities this year and what is our number one priority? Do we all align with these priorities?
2. Data – are we collecting enough data to understand our business and where our business opportunities lie? Are we measuring and driving our individual performance weekly?
3. Rhythm – are we meeting effectively on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis to create alignment and drive both performance and accountability?
Answering these critical questions and putting processes in place to drive performance and accountability will prepare us to excel in a busy job market. What have you got in place to meet the challenges in your business?
I’d love to hear back from you and learn about what is working well for you, I look forward to your reply!
Respectfully,
Carmen Goss
