Our Coaches Corner!

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

An ancient Chinese proverb reminds us; “To listen well, is as powerful a means of influence as to talk well.” While everyone can benefit from this sage advice, these words of wisdom are particularly appropriate for great leaders. Would you consider yourself a good listener? Perhaps a more important question might be, how would your clients, prospects, business associates, friends and family members rate your listening ability? Their feedback just might surprise you, because most people believe they’re much better listeners than they truly are.

Poor listeners frequently confuse the physical act of hearing with the emotional art of listening.  When you genuinely listen you show respect, create trust and develop rapport. The only way to become a better listener is to mindfully practice “active listening” in all of your daily encounters… from the kitchen table to the boardroom table.  Here are a few tips.

- Listen with your ears and your eyes – verbally and nonverbally

- Empty your mind of distracting thoughts – they can come back later

- Be present

- Acknowledge what the person has just said with words, a simple smile or a nod

- Be open to hearing something new and different.  It is dangerous to assume that you know what they are going to say

Rockefeller’s “X” Factor!

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Do you know where your chokepoint is in your business model and industry?  When Rockefeller set out to “win” in the oil business he knew he had to gain an advantage in transportation costs, hence, his heavy involvement with the railroads.  Where do you need to gain your advantage?  Please remember…

1. In planning, we only need to plan 90 days and 10 years out.  The “middle” is now gone, as experienced in 2008, 2009 and 2010

2. Keep it simple, if it is too difficult it likely won’t work

3. Firsthand data is always best, gather it in real time!

Rock with the Rockfeller Habits!

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

We are taking a good, hard look at the following underlying principles in our business:

1. Priorities – what are our top five priorities this year and what is our number one priority?  Do we all align with these priorities?

2. Data – are we collecting enough data to understand our business and where our business opportunities lie?  Are we measuring and driving our individual performance weekly?

3. Rhythm – are we meeting effectively on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual basis to create alignment and drive both performance and accountability?

Answering these critical questions and putting processes in place to drive performance and accountability will prepare us to excel in a busy job market.  What have you got in place to meet the challenges in your business?

I’d love to hear back from you and learn about what is working well for you, I look forward to your reply!

Respectfully,

Carmen Goss

Getting Connected to the Oil & Gas Industry in Calgary

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

By: Carmen Goss, Vice President of Prominent Personnel

Many small business owners want to get connected to the Oil & Gas Industry in Calgary. It is a vibrant and dynamic industry that attracts a ton of talent and technical expertise. Much of the business hub in Calgary revolves around this highly profiled industry. Calgary’s prosperity is driven by the energy industry. It is fondly known as “the oil patch” and the city is home to most of the country’s major oil and gas producers. Calgary boasts a close-knit Oil & Gas community and becoming a part of this community will boost your business success!
Attending Industry events is a great way to get connected. Prominent Personnel hosts an Industry Networking event every two months and more than 200 Oil & Gas professionals attend this event. This is a great opportunity to expand your connections and build relationships. Relationship building is key to your business success, as this town is built on strong business relationships!
When looking to build successful business relationships we suggest you focus on three critical elements. These elements have nothing to do with selling your product or service; they are simply means for connecting and creating a solid foundation for future sales opportunities. When meeting with prospective Industry professionals, we suggest you ask for these three things (in this order!):

1. Information – if you are new to the industry you do need to learn as much as you can about the industry, the companies, and the people in the industry.  This is a critical first step and great questions are most helpful.  Make this all about them and watch your knowledge expand.

2. Referrals – you may wish to expand your new network by asking “who else do you think I should talk to?”  Industry experts love to help and you will be pleasantly surprised by their response!

3. Advice – we all love to share our knowledge, and Oil & Gas professionals are no different.  Ask, “if you were me, what would you suggest I do?”  The responses you receive to this question are guaranteed to grow your business and increase your bottom line!

We also offer individual and group coaching sessions that support you in making powerful industry connections to grow your business and meet your objectives.   Let us show you how to connect to this vibrant industry!
